 Who is a Qualified Dermatologist?
  1. MBBS — Basic medical degree (5.5 years including internship).
    • Must be from a recognized medical college and registered with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or a state medical council.
  2. Postgraduate Qualification in Dermatology
    After MBBS, a doctor must complete 3 years of specialized training through one of the following:
    • MD (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy)
    • DNB (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy) — from the National Board of Examinations (NBE)
    • DVD (Diploma in Dermatology, Venereology & Dermatology) — a 2-year diploma (less common now)
    These degrees ensure training in:
    • Clinical dermatology
    • Dermatosurgery
    • Cosmetic dermatology
    • Venereology (sexually transmitted diseases)
    • Leprosy
  3. Registration & Recognition
    • Must be registered as a specialist with a State Medical Council or the National Medical Commission.
    • Many are also members of IADVL, which verifies dermatologists with recognized qualifications.
